Recently, our owner, Jordan attended a lecture hosted by Dr. Jen Chatfield and PACCC (Professional Animal Care Certification Council) on this "Mystery Dog Illness" and we wanted to share some of the information obtained during the talk.
Top Level Takeaways:
👉 Scientists / Vets have been tracking this for over a year, it has just recently gained mainstream media attention.
👉 To Dr. Chatfield's knowledge, there have not been any confirmed cases in North Carolina.
👉 It is presenting like almost all upper respiratory infections and all upper respiratory infections have the potential to progress and lead to pneumonia or even death (as of right now there are no indications this is any more deadly than known upper respiratory infections.)
Tips for keeping your dog safe:
💉 Be sure your vaccinations are up to date
👩⚕️ If your dog does show symptoms, seek medical treatment ASAP
✨ If your dog is prone to infections, then this might be a good time to cut back on socializing with other dogs
🦮 Avoid dog parks (but this is pretty common advice all the time for avoiding germs)
Slowing the spread:
👚👖 If you (as the human) are around a dog you think might be sick, you should change your shirt and pants before seeing your pet in case any "gunk" got on your clothes from the sick dog's mouth or nose.
🧼Thoroughly wash your hands (not just hand sanitizer)
✨If your dog is showing symptoms, be sure to keep them isolated from other pets as much as possible.
Many of you have come to Peak City Puppy as an alternative to boarding for this very reason, health concerns. We will continue to monitor new information coming out and adjust any protocols we need to as more is learned. At this time, the overall tone from the lecture was there is no reason to panic and unless your dog is already at high risk, not much need to alter your normal activities.
